As early
as eight years old, some golden retrievers will already be showing the stress
of aging, especially if they’re overweight or less active. Like humans, exercise
is an essential part of golden retriever’s care; although arthritis or other conditions
can make it difficult for them to move around. Their diet also needs to change
as they get older, their systems can’t always handle the same routine they had
when they were younger. Additionally, your grooming routine may have to be altered
somewhat; depending on which, if any, health conditions your golden retriever
receives care for.
Obesity
Golden retrievers which aren’t properly
exercised are more likely to be overweight or even obese than other breeds; golden
retriever’s aging bodies really cannot handle the extra weight, it will make them
act and feel older than they are. Your exercise routine may change as your golden
retriever ages; this can account for the weight gain. Another reason for the weight
gain can be your giving your dog extra treats. This isn’t good for them, though,
so treats should be limited to healthy snacks most of the time; taking extra care
for your golden retriever will help them live happier and healthier.
Changes
In Diet
As part of your golden retriever’s care routine, modifying their
diet to help them feel healthier is a must; feeding your dog smaller, more frequent,
meals may be one way to comfort their aging digestive system. The foods you give
them may also need to change; discuss your golden retriever’s health and eating
habits with their veterinarian for specific changes. Especially before and after
exercise your dogs digestive system may be stressed, extra care for your golden
retriever’s sensitivity will probably be needed.
Changes In Exercise
Your
golden retriever’s care may change when it comes to exercise, too, as their aches
and pains may make them less willing to play like they once did. Working at their
comfort level, replacing a long and brisk walk with two shorter and slower ones
may be easier for your golden retriever. Additionally, swimming is thought to
be more comfortable for golden retrievers than running; but they may get colder
than they used to, so bring extra towels, just in case.
Changes In Coat
As
you are taking care of your golden retriever, you may notice its coat getting
thinner as he or she ages. This could be due to age or it could indicate a thyroid
disorder. Ask your veterinarian to be sure. If your dog’s coat is thinning, or
its skin is irritable strictly due to age, you may want to reduce their bathing
to only when necessary and start using a shampoo that is specially made for water
loving dogs that will restore the oils to their coat.
Aging Doesn’t Change
Love
While their appearance may change and the care you give your golden
retriever may change, the way you love them never will. Following the above guidelines
will help your golden retriever to live happier and healthier for the rest of
its life; the most important of these are its diet. Obesity is known to affect
golden retrievers particularly harshly, and the best cure is a balanced diet
and nutrition program of both dried and natural foods as well as appropriate
exercise.
