Things To Consider Before Buying A Golden Retriever Puppy
Review
Of Golden Retriever Puppy Temperament
A golden retriever’s natural predisposition
is friendly, out going, good natured, intelligent, determined, and dedicated.
These features make golden retrievers wonderful pets and companions; these same
features can also make them terrible pets. Friendly means to everyone, no guard
dog here; outgoing also means it wants to jump on, lick, or chew everyone it meets.
Intelligence isn’t just being good at tricks, but also at figuring things out,
such as which master will give out table scraps.
Golden retrievers are
very determined, which means they will try to learn a new skill until they have
it down pat, but they will also expect you to throw a tennis ball until your arm
is about ready to fall off. This dedication is one of the features that people
look for in dogs, but that dedication needs to go both ways. Boredom in your golden
retriever puppy usually leads to destructiveness.
What To Expect For The
First Few Days
When you first bring your golden retriever puppy home, give
your puppy the tour; where your puppy eats, sleeps, and performs other necessary
tasks. Your puppy should be eager to investigate its new surroundings; there will
be a lot of new smells, but sniffing in a circle is a sign that they need to go
outside. Expect to stay home with you golden retriever puppy for at least four
days, though a week would be better, to establish a routine that will help your
puppy to live by the house rules.
Age Appropriate Behavior
You should
expect a golden retriever puppy to be very playful and be distracted easily from
training; being consistent will rectify the situation eventually. When training,
you may also experience setbacks, such as a skill they’d seemed to have mastered
the day before seems all but forgotten today. This is normal puppy behavior; it
doesn’t mean your golden retriever puppy is stupid or stubborn, it is just being
a puppy.
Golden retrievers are known to have puppy like behavior for three
years, sometimes more; being tolerant of this behavior, while remaining firm and
consistent with the consequences, will produce a well mannered yet playful and
energetic golden retriever.
As Your Puppy Grows
As your puppy grows
into a dog, you can expect to be house training for a couple of months at least.
You will also need a very attentive puppy sitter if your golden retriever puppy
will ever be alone for more than six hours; or if your dog will be alone more
than it is accustomed to. You can also expect shedding every spring like clockwork,
an active and energetic exercise mate, an intelligent and dedicated working dog,
a constant companion, and a loving dedicated family pet.
What Is Expected
Of You
As an owner of a golden retriever puppy, you are expected to accepts
and embrace its temperament. You are also expected to dedicate as much to your
golden retriever as it is willing to dedicate to you, especially if you plan to
train your dog to work or compete; or take your dog hiking and running frequently.
You are expected to feed your golden retriever high quality food, provide regular
veterinary care, and to be committed to your dog for life. You should know how
to choose the right golden retriever puppy so that you can be sure the time
you two spend together will be an enjoyable one.
