Crate
training is one way to help house train your golden retriever, as it is a small
area, and they are less likely to soil in a place where they must sleep. Make
sure your puppy is old enough to hold its business for a couple of hours, it has
a clean bill of health from the veterinarian, and make sure your puppy came from
a breeder which kept it in a room rather than a small confined space.
The
reasons for these conditions are simple; you want to set your golden retriever
puppy up for house training success. To start, you want to introduce your puppy
to the crate with the door off. If your puppy is hesitant to investigate, take
the lid off and try again. If your golden retriever puppy is still hesitant, put
a little food or a treat in there and try to let your puppy discover it on its
own.
Keep putting a treat in there until you no longer have a problem getting
your puppy to go in there. Gradually put more interesting things in there like
toys and if your puppy has a special stuffed toy they sleep with put that in there
too. Once your puppy begins to enjoy their time in the crate, put the door back
on and confine your puppy for small amounts of time. Very gradually, increase
the time. As soon as the time is up, immediately bring your golden retriever puppy
outside. As soon as they relieve themselves, praise them and pat them for a job
well done.
Keeping up this behavior has been known to quickly house train
a golden retriever. If you have the time to spend every day monitoring their time
and taking them out, that is. If you dont, you may need to paper train your puppy
first, and then move to the outdoors.
Paper Training
If you are
going to attempt to house train your golden retriever by way of paper training,
be prepared to dedicate a safe room with hard covered floors, as you will likely
be cleaning the floor a lot. Try to notice when your puppy relieves itself, and
where it does, and go with the puppys flow; concentrate the papers where your
puppy messes the most, and then very gradually reduce the papers until your puppy
gets used to only going on the paper.
To finish your golden retriever house
training, pick an area outside where you want your puppy to relieve itself and,
after every meal, take your puppy to this spot. If they seem reluctant to go,
you may need to newspaper this outdoor spot for awhile until your puppy gets the
routine down.
Whichever method you decide to use, consistency is the key.
Its best to show your golden retriever the right way to be house trained. If
youre going to take the time to train him or her, its worth the time to do it
right the first time than to spend twice as much time doing it the wrong way over
and over again.
If You Dont Want To House Train Your Golden Retriever
If
you dont want to house train your golden retriever, consider adopting an older
dog; dogs obtained through golden
retriever rescue/adoption are often house trained and already have a basic
skill set in obedience training. If the a puppy seems like a lot of work and you
want a pet that is less trouble but love golden retrievers, many rescued golden
retrievers are already house trained!
