Golden
retrievers are very trainable; they have an aim-to-please personality and are
very determined problem solvers. Giving them clear direction and predictable rewards
will help your puppy learn all the commands you want it to; when training your
golden retriever remember the four P’s: patience, practice, praise, and persistence.
Most golden retrievers should be happy enough with praise alone, but some more
strong willed dogs may require the extra enticement of a treat.
Tools For
Training
For general tricks like jump through a hoop, play dead or shake,
food or praise is about the only tool you need. For obedience training, food,
praise, and a lead would probably gain the most success. For house training persistence,
praise, and a very watchful eye will lead the path to success. Keep in mind that
your golden retriever wants to please you and wants to get your approval, this
makes golden retriever training easy with persistence.
House Training
House
training has two schools of theory: the crate method and the paper training method;
both methods work, the difference almost entirely relies on how much time you
have and how much you’re willing to clean. The paper training method can be somewhat
labor intensive but if you aren’t home a lot during the week it is a way for your
golden retriever’s training to begin. If you are able to spend a lot of time with
your golden retriever puppy then the crate method could really speed the process
of house training.
Tricks
Teaching a golden retriever tricks should
be fun for both of you, some popular tricks include, ‘playing dead’, ‘shaking’,
‘rolling over’, and ‘jumping through a hoop’. As with all other dog tricks, sticking
with it and remembering the four P’s will be your fastest rout to success. Tricks
should only be taught to your dog if both of you are in the mood to play tricks.
If you are getting aggravated you may need to quit for a time and return to it
later.
Obedience Training
Obedience training your golden retriever
is probably the best gift you can give; it could save you pet’s life in the right
situation. Learning essential commands, like stay, down, sit and drop it, could
train your golden retriever for it’s own safety; what if they were about to run
into a busy street and you could yell “down” and your golden retriever would immediately
lay down? That is the reason to obedience train; also a well mannered dog is so
much nicer to have in a house interacting with the family. A dog which doesn’t
know how to sit still at the right times or understand that there is a time to
play and a time to lie down can be a nuisance. Enjoy your golden
retriever obedience training; get the family involved. It can be a fun activity
for all involved.
