    Retrievers

Retrievers are sporting dogs that were primarily designed to retrieve fowl for hunters; most today are beloved pets and show dogs. The American Kennel Club does recognize five different breeds under the title of ‘retriever’ they are: golden retriever, Labrador retriever, curly coat retriever, flat coat retriever, and the Chesapeake Bay retrievers or Chessies.

    Chesapeake Bay Retrievers

Chesapeake Bay retrievers are a friendly, smart, and willful dog; they can be difficult to train as they don’t like to take direction. They come in a wide range of brown toned colors and have a shorter fur than a golden retriever. Their grooming needs are less than a golden retriever also as over bathing them will strip them of their water resistant quality to their coat. Chesapeake Bay retrievers do require a little alteration, their dew claws need to be removed; their grooming requirements are slight: a bristle brush to remove dead hair, clipping of toenails and brushing of teeth.

Chesapeake Bay retrievers are strong swimmers and excellent companions; they are tolerant of other live in pets but may chase neighbor hood strays. Chessies tend to me more territorial than other retrievers and need to have their own yard to roam in; these dogs would not be satisfied with apartment or condo life, but would probably enjoy a farm. Further more they prefer a cold climate as their coat is thick and wooly.

    Curly Coat Retrievers

Curly Coat Retrievers are said to be the oldest retriever breed. They have a distinctive tightly curled coat over their entire bodies save the front of legs and face; which is a range of dark colors from black to near burgundy tone. This is an intelligent breed of dog, which can be a little hard to train; obedience training should begin as soon as a puppy is brought home. The curly coat retriever loves to swim and can make a terrific companion and loyal family pet.

Grooming is easy for this bread is brushing is only required during their heavy shedding season and after a bath; brushing can make the curls look frizzed, groomers lightly mist coat after brushing to refresh the curls. The Curly Coat retriever makes a good guard dog as it is very protective of its family; and is not as accepting of strangers as other retrievers can be.

    Flat Coat Retriever

The flat coat retriever should have a solid looking flat lying coat, which is very shiny and solid black or solid liver colored. They love to swim, run and fetch; they make very good companions and family pets. They are especially keen at retrieving in marshy waters, and are attention loving dogs. Flat coat retrievers are very intelligent and easy to train; they have a short attention span and respond best to short but sweet training sessions.

Flat coat retrievers tend to be protective of their family and make a fair watch dog. Their grooming requires only weekly brushing, necessary (due to smell or debris) cleaning, monthly nail trimming, and tooth brushing.

    Labrador Retrievers

Labrador retrievers are America’s most popular pet, they are kind, loving, friendly, intelligent, trainable, and protective. They make a fair watch dog, but seldom a guard dog. Labradors are excellent trackers, hunting companions, working dogs (police and handicap assistance), and devoted family pets.

Their coat is short and dense; needs very little washing or brushing. Their coloring is generally black, blonde (yellow), or brown (chocolate) plus the occasional and rare color of silver tones.

    Traits In Common

All retrievers are of a similar size and activity level, they love to be active and out doors. They are all smart, kind, trainable, and eager to please their owners. Retrievers were bred as hunting companions and, with the proper training, they can still perform as a hunters companion today.
