Everybody knows what an easy-going and smart dog the golden retriever breed is. In fact the Golden retriever is number four on the list of registered dogs of the American kennel club. That’s the surest sign of popularity as any I can think of. They are often referred to as America’s favorite dog. And with good reason. They’re playful, loyal, gentle and hard-working.
Sure, they make a great family dog, they love to run the love to play fetch and they love the beach. I have spent literally hours on the beach with a frisbee in my hand with my golden. He will run until his paws fall off and get up and run some more. Anyone that has ever owned a golden can attest to this fact.
I also have absolutely no problem leaving any of my Golden retriever breed dogs with my kids. They love to rough-and-tumble with children but are still very gentle. And my kids at times have pulled their tails or hands in their mouth and yanked on their nether regions with nary a scratch. That’s not to say that this something I would recommend that you test with your dog. But my dogs have always been very gentle in this respect.
But the Golden retriever breed is much more than just a charming family dog. They have many other uses in our society. Let’s take for example its original purpose, hunting. The Golden retriever today is as good a hunting dog as it was in the 1800s when it was conceived. In fact, over the years and through selective breeding, it is probably a better dog than it originally was. If you need to sit in a duck blind for hours on end and then have your dog gladly dive in the water and get a duck then chances are you’re sitting beside a golden retriever.
Golden retrievers however have a desire to work and be active. They also have an innate intelligence that makes them an ideal dog for other tasks. Take for example search and rescue. Since the Golden retriever loves to please people, and has a natural ability, like all dogs, to follow its nose, and since it is also super smart, it makes the ideal search and rescue dog. Goldens have been used to find avalanche victims, victims means of building collapse, and many of the things.
This of course requires a great deal of training but the training is relatively easy because of the dogs intelligence.
The Golden retriever breed also shines when it comes to service work. Because of the easy-going nature, they can get along with virtually anyone. They are great Seeing Eye dogs for example. They can however also serve as morale boosters. People get a natural high from petting a dog. And Golden’s love attention. This means they will also gladly sit beside another human being and be petted for as long as the human being is willing to do the petting.
They can also serve as dogs that assist anyone that might be deaf. The advantages here are obvious, the dog can alert the individual to something it hears that they may not.
These dogs have an excellent work ethic. Once assigned a task, they will work until the collapse.
Not matter how you look at it, the Golden Retriever Breed is fabulous dog. They are utilitarian, smart and fun loving. As long as you are not looking for a watchdog and you have lots of time and energy to devote to their fitness, you will have a lifelong companion and friend.
