Golden Retriever Puppy Training Tips

Wednesday, May 4th, 2011

Golden Retrievers are great dogs. Not only are they cute and loveable, they are great with families that have children. These dogs are mild natured and are very interested in pleasing their owners. This makes them fairly easy to train, as long as you take the time and effort that is needed to do it. You have to show them the acceptable behaviors and teach them the rules in their new home.

The first thing you should do is house train your new dog. You have a responsibility to keep your home clean and free from animal urine and feces. A great way to train your golden retriever puppy to do these things outside is to make use of a crate. You should keep them in the crate over night or during times that you cannot be with them. As soon as you let them out of the crate you should take them right outside for a walk or let them run in the yard so they can do their business out there.

Another benefit of crate training your golden retriever puppy is that it protects your furniture and other items around your home from the chewing the nearly every puppy does. While purchasing a crate may cost you between twenty five and two hundred dollars, compare this price to the price of replacing your furniture because the puppy chewed it up. The crate is definitely less expensive.

One way to curb the natural need to chew is to provide them with chew toys. There are great toys available on the market today that will allow them to chew but not destroy your property. Rawhide bones are great because they clean their teeth as well as meet their need to chew. If you teach them what is acceptable to chew on then you are training them to leave all of the items that are off limits alone.

When you leave the dog in the crate while you are away at work or out of the home for awhile you are also keeping them from getting hurt. Dogs do not understand that chewing on electrical cords or on bottles of chemicals can hurt, if not kill, them. All they know is that they need to chew and these items are available. You can protect them from getting sick or killed by keeping them in the crate while you are gone.

Golden Retrievers tend to need a lot of attention. This is great if you are able to spend all day every day with them but spending this much time with your puppy is not something that every person can do. You can make use of the crate to teach your new puppy that they will need to be on their own at times. They will teach them to spend time alone and will cut down on the separation anxiety that some golden retrievers have when their owners leave them alone.

Puppies sometimes get overly excited and begin to nip at people and begin running about the house uncontrollably. You can calm them down by putting them in the crate for a short amount of time. This will give them the necessary time to compose themselves and get back to a more manageable energy level. You should not use your crate in a negative way, for punishment. It should be used for training purposes. Your golden retriever puppy will learn to be the great dog that you have always wished for after spending some time being trained by their new owner.

Do Bark Collars Stop the Barking?

Monday, May 2nd, 2011

Most of the times, dogs bark for a justifiable reason. Some though dogs are very active or restless and tend to vocalize very often. Dogs are extremely attached to their owners and feel their absence; they usually become noisy when they are left alone in the house.

Because it happens when the owner is not around, it is also one of the most difficult to control. At one time, this usually led to a difficult decision: have the dog de-barked, or send the dog away. Of course, these are rushed decisions which should only be used as a last resort. Yet, if neighbors complain constantly, there’s not much the owner can do.

Luckily, bark collars can help in these situations. First bark collars were not flawless. They often reacted to the barking of another dog, and could not differentiate between the types of barks, so would correct the dog when it was responding as any dog would; and did not necessarily have a safety cut-off in case the dog was hurt or panicked.

Since then, bark collars have evolved. There are now three types available: spray, sonic, and static. All these collars use the same principle. When the dog produces sounds and vibrations within a certain range or frequencies, the collar starts functioning. The combination of vibration and barking makes the collar react only to the dog’s noise. Having adjustable volume and frequency monitoring, these collars will not be triggered by reactions such as fear or stress.

Spray bark collars work by releasing a strong scented fluid such as citronella (not recommended for scent hounds such as bloodhounds or beagles); sonic collars emit a sound too high for human ears, but audible to dogs; static collars use an electrical discharge to ‘shock’ the dog. None of these devices can seriously harm the animal. Many of the static bark collars have adjustable steps (and increasing levels of correction); and most have an automatic timed shutdown if the dog barks for an extended period without cease. Moreover, the bark collar can switch to a lower setting if the dog doesn’t produce any noise for a certain amount of time. This system is meant to encourage your dog to only bark when it has to.

However, even if you buy a bark collar, this does not mean you should not train your dog as well. It should not be left on all the time, and initial sessions with it should be monitored. It is important to monitor the first days when the dog wears the collar; if you cannot do it all the time, because you have to leave for work or school, you could ask a neighbor to help you. Usually, they will be happy to help, since they are the ones that must endure the noise. Choose a person whom your dog trusts already.

Monitoring your dog constantly can be very useful. Dogs need much more than an anti-bark collar in order to learn how to behave. You must train them constantly, especially during their first year of life.

Instead of resorting to extreme solutions, consider purchasing bark collars instead. These devices can prove to be very efficient in educating your dog. If you want to know more details about these devices and the mechanisms they use, read more about bark collars here.

Taking Your Golden Retriever Puppy to Puppy School

Monday, May 2nd, 2011

Owning a golden retriever puppy, especially for first time dog owners, is both a very good and very bad thing. Good because a golden retriever puppy is a great dog to own for both first time and veteran dog owners. They are sweet, affectionate, fun-loving and very people-oriented dogs. They love spending time with their masters, going out to play or just cuddling and spending some downtime together.

The problem is golden retriever puppies are among the biggest, fastest growing and curious puppy breeds around. They poke their noses into anything they can find, and if it looks, smells, tastes or is sized like food, well, say goodbye to your stuff.

For veteran golden retriever owners, puppy behavior is easily corrected, and the dog does grow out of it quickly. However, for first time owners, this stage of the dog’s life can be very irritating and frustrating, thus a lot of pet owners end up resorting to sending their golden retriever puppy to a puppy obedience school!

If you don’t have the time or prior experience in training a golden retriever puppy, then a puppy school is a great idea. You will not only be able to get professional help in training your puppy, you and your pet can also bond with each other throughout the process, and he or she can learn to get along with other puppies as well.

There are a lot of different types of puppy schools that you can choose from. You can choose a home option, where the dog trainer will come to your home. You can opt for a single lesson, and pay for each session separately, or you can buy a complete package of lessons. The advantages of this are that you set the hours to your convenience and your puppy would be more comfortable than learning outside because of the familiar surroundings. Also, it won’t cost as much compared to sending your puppy to a regular puppy school. So, if there are only one or two tricks or behavioral problems to learn and correct, then this might be a great option for you.

If you wish to bring your puppy to a puppy obedience school, then you have to follow the strict lesson plan in order to maximize the benefits for your puppy. Most puppy obedience schools will last around 4-6 weeks, and will include basic training for your puppy. Golden retriever puppies, in general, have the edge because they are intelligent and highly trainable. You can bring your own puppy there and learn with the other puppy owners, or you can opt for a puppy school that allows puppy housing. This way, you can leave an uncontrollable and untrained puppy and come back for a well-mannered and calm dog. The problem is, you won’t be able to bond with your puppy during these highly crucial times of its development, and you won’t be able to see it progress as it learns.

Take your time in picking out which type of puppy obedience school you want for your golden retriever puppy. Make sure that you choose according to your budget, lifestyle and personal needs for your pet.

White Golden Retriever - Where Can You Find Pure Bred White Retrievers?

Saturday, April 30th, 2011

To see pictures of pure white Golden Retrievers is a wonderful sight, but if you’re looking to find a pure bred dog, keep on looking. To get a pure snowy white coat, it’s necessary to cross breed although some back-street breeders will tell you otherwise. Puppies can start out pretty light but then will get darker as they grow older. British Goldens (also English, European, or Australian) are sometimes thought of as white. This is due to the fact that their double coats are often extremely light in color. They usually range all the way to cream, but never pure snowy white.

A light cream-colored English dog is often called a white Golden Retriever, despite this fact. These dogs came from the same lineage as their darker American counterparts across the pond. The Golden Retriever originally came from Scotland in the mid to late 1900′s. In actual fact, all the dogs of this breed can be traced back to 2 dogs that were owned by Sir Dudley Marjoribanks (later Baron Tweedmouth). The breed in the UK and all over Europe has developed differently than the American Goldens. Shorter and bulkier, they often weigh slightly more and have a level-line body. Their muzzles are different shape, with a squarer forward and eyes that are rounder in shape.

Naturally, the Kennel Club of England (KC) and the American Kennel Club (AKC) vary in the characteristics required in the breed of the Golden Retriever. According to discerning breeders of English Goldens, an almost white Golden Retriever is better than a darker one. Red and Mahogany colored coats are not permissible in the KC while the AKC’s standards object to extremely light or dark hair. In both organizations a few white hairs on the chest are permissible. No matter the shade, both strains of the breed have the famous temperament of Goldies: warm, friendly, easy-going, confident, and happy with an affinity for training.

A few breeders have begun cross breeding the American Goldie with the English white Golden Retriever to add a mixture of the best traits of each. Puppy’s like these can be adorable and if you are looking for enjoyment they can be a great addition to any family. However, these dogs will not show well according to AKC and UK standards. If a show dog is the goal, seek out a reputable, high-quality breeder. You should get a good look at the parents of the golden and also at the papers to help you choose a top quality Retriever. These dogs are extremely pleasant companions no matter what shade of golden pleases you.

Two Golden Retriever Breed Jobs

Saturday, April 30th, 2011

Everybody knows what an easy-going and smart dog the golden retriever breed is. In fact the Golden retriever is number four on the list of registered dogs of the American kennel club. That’s the surest sign of popularity as any I can think of. They are often referred to as America’s favorite dog. And with good reason. They’re playful, loyal, gentle and hard-working.

Sure, they make a great family dog, they love to run the love to play fetch and they love the beach. I have spent literally hours on the beach with a frisbee in my hand with my golden. He will run until his paws fall off and get up and run some more. Anyone that has ever owned a golden can attest to this fact.

I also have absolutely no problem leaving any of my Golden retriever breed dogs with my kids. They love to rough-and-tumble with children but are still very gentle. And my kids at times have pulled their tails or hands in their mouth and yanked on their nether regions with nary a scratch. That’s not to say that this something I would recommend that you test with your dog. But my dogs have always been very gentle in this respect.

But the Golden retriever breed is much more than just a charming family dog. They have many other uses in our society. Let’s take for example its original purpose, hunting. The Golden retriever today is as good a hunting dog as it was in the 1800s when it was conceived. In fact, over the years and through selective breeding, it is probably a better dog than it originally was. If you need to sit in a duck blind for hours on end and then have your dog gladly dive in the water and get a duck then chances are you’re sitting beside a golden retriever.

Golden retrievers however have a desire to work and be active. They also have an innate intelligence that makes them an ideal dog for other tasks. Take for example search and rescue. Since the Golden retriever loves to please people, and has a natural ability, like all dogs, to follow its nose, and since it is also super smart, it makes the ideal search and rescue dog. Goldens have been used to find avalanche victims, victims means of building collapse, and many of the things.

This of course requires a great deal of training but the training is relatively easy because of the dogs intelligence.

The Golden retriever breed also shines when it comes to service work. Because of the easy-going nature, they can get along with virtually anyone. They are great Seeing Eye dogs for example. They can however also serve as morale boosters. People get a natural high from petting a dog. And Golden’s love attention. This means they will also gladly sit beside another human being and be petted for as long as the human being is willing to do the petting.

They can also serve as dogs that assist anyone that might be deaf. The advantages here are obvious, the dog can alert the individual to something it hears that they may not.

These dogs have an excellent work ethic. Once assigned a task, they will work until the collapse.

Not matter how you look at it, the Golden Retriever Breed is fabulous dog. They are utilitarian, smart and fun loving. As long as you are not looking for a watchdog and you have lots of time and energy to devote to their fitness, you will have a lifelong companion and friend.

Why Should You Consider Bark Collars?

Saturday, April 30th, 2011

Bark collars were invented as a solution to the frustrating problem of dogs barking all the time, for no apparent reason. If you have the bad luck of living in a neighborhood where there are many such dogs, your life can turn into a nightmare.

Originally, there was one style of bark collar, the static or ‘shock’ collar. As with many new technologies, there were some unforeseen complications. The device wasn’t able to tell one dog’s bark from another and it often reacted randomly, even if the dog wearing it wasn’t at fault. There were a few reported cases of physical or extreme psychological harm because a dog was left unmonitored before finding out how it would react to the collar.

While the mechanisms have been developed, the basic idea of these devices stays the same.

These collars are not dangerous and they merely annoy the dog and make it bark less often. (Not only these collars can correct excessive barking, but they can also teach the dog to avoid other annoying behaviors).

Nowadays, bark collars come in three versions - static, sonic and with spray. The bark collar in the first category use a strong scented citrus spray that annoys the animal and make it stop barking. This spray is not harmful for the dog. The sonic one uses high-pitched sounds only dogs can hear. Both the sonic and citrus collars are safe to use on animals that are very sensitive to physical stimulation. The collar with citronella musn’t be used on scent hounds, which are extremely sensitive to scents.

The static collar seems to be the most appreciated among all three versions. Static collars can be triggered by continuous barking for a certain period of time. Requiring that both systems be activated prevents the collar from reacting to another dog barking. Also having a volume and frequency requirement helps prevent the collar from being triggered by fear, pain, or other vocalizations not tied to problem barking. These devices have adjustable steps and automatically shut down if the dog barks for a period longer than the one preset. This collar can also reset to a lower level if no barking occurs for a certain amount of time. This system helps in teaching the dog to bark only when needed.

Like all training aids, a bark collar works best when owner helps the dog understand what the desired behavior is. They shouldn’t be used as a single method of training. Praise and play for good behavior, exercise to help reduce restlessness and anxiety, and activities to keep the dog occupied when alone are all positive items that can help reduce the perceived need to bark for attention.

Anti-bark collars are the most practical and humane methods of teaching the dog it shouldn’t bark all the time. Most definitely they are preferable to other alternatives, such as the invasive debarking surgery or alienating the dog.

Even though the first versions of bark collar weren’t perfect, they have been improved in time. Most types of dog collars can be adjusted manually or digitally. If you want to find out more about different types of bark collar, click here.

Make the Neighbor’s Dog Stop Barking

Friday, April 29th, 2011

A bark collar might be the best way to solve the problem of barking dogs. Although it may not be your dog that is causing the disturbance, any dog barking can disrupt sleep, and make life very difficult. Dogs bark for a number of different reasons, and often it is through habit. This problem must be solved as soon as possible, as it can quickly turn into a real nightmare for everyone.

Proper training or anti-bark collars are great solutions for barking dogs. If the dog belongs to a neighbor living close to you, this can create a serious discomfort and tense atmosphere. Although you may love dogs or even have a dog yourself, the continuous noise that a dog creates can begin to annoy you. If your relationship with the dog owner is good, it should be no problem for you to suggest him a bark collar for their pet.

Some people have never even heard of this style of collar, so they may be simply ill informed. He might not even realize that his pet is such a great problem for everybody living in that area. There are many anti-barking options he should consider and it’s his responsibility to do something about the issue right away. You can suggest him a sensors or an electronic device for dog barking. Some of these devices can be quite expensive and it’s not your responsibility to buy them.

This is why you need to tell your neighbor about the problem and make him seriously consider to put an end to it. What you can do is try to help him find out why his dog barks so often. It may happen from many reasons. The animal might be in need of more affection or it is hungry or thirsty. You may need to find out from your neighbor why the dog is barking, and think about the times of day that it is. Maybe the pet is only barking when his owner is away and it feels lonely, or maybe it just reacts to noise in the neighborhood. Once you explain to your neighbor how bad the problem has got they will need to think about bark collars.

These collars are great solutions to this particular problem and they work well if combined with training. Dogs love being rewarded, and respond well to training that involves praise and rewards. Bark collars come in more types and models, with different prices and styles. They all offer help with a barking dog in a humane and safe way. Teaching the dog that barking for no reason is a bad habit, and one that will need to be stopped. Some bark collars use mild shocks that irritate the dog and make it stop barking.

Dogs make the connection between the shock and their barking. They are intelligent creatures and training them this way won’t be a problem. If you take initiative, your neighbor will probably be glad that you helped him with his dog. Often people are simply far too busy, and do not realize that their dog is becoming a pain to the people in the surrounding areas.

Before considering an anti-barking solution, you need to determine the reason why the dog barks so much. If the neighbor’s dog is the culprit, you can recommend your neighbor to purchase a bark collar. If you want to find out more about dog barking solutions and types of bark collar, click here.

Why Some Australian States Ban Bark Collars?

Friday, April 29th, 2011

Barking is what dogs do best. That’s how they communicate with people and with other dogs. There are many reasons why they bark. the normal barking of a dog is no problem. There are some dogs that bark way too much. When a dog is an excessive barker, it can start to cause problems with the neighbors or in the household. You’re probably looking for solutions for the problems your noisy dog cause. Some people think that the solution should be anti bark collars.

Yet you cannot buy them in some Australian states. In these states the import and selling of these devices is prohibited by law. Import companies have worked around the legislation and disassemble the collars before sending them to these Australian states or give the products other names.

They are illegal in the Australian Capital Territory, New South Wales and South Australia, while the Northern Territory and Victoria allow them to be used, but only after speaking to a vet and trying other solutions. The bark collars actually have to be prescribed. In Western Australia, Tasmania and Queensland, bark collars are free to be purchased.

A shock no bark collar works by laying directly against the dog’s throat. When the dog barks for a longer period, he will get a shock. Static collars have adjustable levels. The intensity of the shock increases with the length of the bark. If he barks or makes noise again within a set time, usually 30 seconds, he gets a slightly higher shock. Such collars usually have 7 to 10 levels.

In the countries where bark collars are forbidden, they are considered inhumane. Other countries apart from Australia forbid bark collars as well. Those who like this method say that it isn’t painful for the dog. Some of those who believe they are painful have tested them themselves. Those people have all said that the shocks are painful.

A shock bark collar isn’t the only alternative to teach a dog to not bark. Other types use citrus smell. They are based on the same idea. They replace the shock with citrus smell eliminated to the dog’s face. Dogs find both the spray and the scent unpleasant, which stops them from barking. This method doesn’t hurt the dog at all.

The other option is training. You can fnd help with training in any pet center. However, combining the two methods gives the best results in the shortest amount of time.

The use of bark collars is strictly forbidden or restricted in some Australian states. Australian dog owners are forced to consider other alternatives to train their dogs.

Resource Box

There are many options to teach your dog good behavior, such as dog training or use bark collars.. In some states in Australia, dog collars are forbidden by law, as they are considered cruel methods of training. If you want to read more about purchasing bark collars in Australia, click this link.

Educate Your Dog With Bark Collars

Friday, April 29th, 2011

There’s nothing unusual if your dog barks. What’s not so normal is for your dog to bark all the time, without any apparent reason. If this is the case, you need to step up and make a change in your dog’s life in order to change its behavior. Because some dog owners manifest their love through cuddling and petting, the dog feels encouraged to insist in its loud behavior and constantly craves for more attention. This is why you shouldn’t blame the dog next time he barks annoyingly and realize that it is not his fault, but your own.

Before leaving the house you need to make sure that your dog is prepared for your absence. Be sure he or she has plenty of water, enough food (don’t go overboard here unless you want an overweight dog who eats out of loneliness or boredom, much like some humans do), and has a nice and comfortable place to just chill out where he is not able to see other pets or people. It’s very likely that the dog isn’t used to being left alone and this is why it gets so loud in your absence. He has soon learned that the world revolves around him and when he finds himself “abandoned” in the empty house he becomes distraught and starts barking-did you expect differently?.

Even if you talk to your dog, it’s obvious that he won’t get a word you say; what he can learn from is the way you behave with him. When you go overboard and go on and on about how everything is going to be just fine and you will be back very soon, you are actually just making things worse. When you come back home, and start to cuddle him right away, he will know that he is allowed to do anything.

If you have tried everything you know to do and are still struggling with a dog that barks far more than the average dog, there are some things called bark collars that in my opinion should be one of the last things to try for some peace and quiet. There are a few different ones available and I find the Citronella spray bark collars to be one that work but does not inflict any pain or super-high pitched sounds. These collars don’t inflict pain but are rather annoying for the pet. They produce a citrus smell that some people actually enjoy. Because dogs don’t like it, they will soon learn it’s better to shut up before the spray activates. You don’t need to send your dog away when there are so many options for you to train it into behaving better.

Many times when a dog barks is nothing more than a natural reaction. You can choose from many models of bark collars that can train your dog into barking less. Click here to find out more on the types of bark collars available.
